ForeignTrainedDentists.Org is a social network which aims to promote integration of international / foreign trained dentists living in America. The current road map for foreign trained dentists to practice in the United States serves as a brick wall. ForeignTrainedDentists.Org calls for foreign dentists and their patients, dental reform organizations, American dentists, politicians, insurance companies, and foreign dental schools to unite in pursuing this cause. Our hopes are to contribute to an American society with so many gaps in dental care that can be fulfilled by fully qualified foreign trained dentists living in America.

IF YOU ARE A FOREIGN TRAINED DENTIST LIVING IN THE U.S. PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT ON YOUR IDEAS FOR HOW WE SHOULD BUILD THIS SITE. I see we've already gotten hits from Utah and Maryland. You will be asked a simple math question so we can make sure you are a human commenting and not a Internet Robot :).  See this blog for my initial ideas: http://www.cognitivemetaphors.com/foreigntraineddentists.  I've been talking to a lot of people with a lot of good ideas. I like to do the problem justice by capturing the ideas of everyone in the same situation in a comprehensive, well maintained community website.

** UPDATE 01/30/2011 - A friend and I will be working on a new feature or standalone site that will be a marketplace for foreign trained dentists living in the United States to find jobs as dental assistants. It's a practical step towards the reality of having to make a living and at the same time pursuing US requirements that are difficult at best to surmount. Perhaps if we start with this step together, we can bring attention to the riduculousness of the situation. If anyone is interested in being test users, helping with requirements gathering, or doing research on how dental assistants get jobs in different parts of the country, I'd be happy for the help and to take in your inputs. Email me at acgarcia21@yahoo.com if you are. **

Read the comments attached to this article from people who are currently in this situation.

Foreign Trained Dentists Improvements Coming

Here's a short presentation that I will be adding to. You'll be noticing changes on the site and I hope anyone reading this who is involved in the problem as I am framing it will volunteer their time to make this site a thriving community bent on making a difference.

Feature Article - Comment From One Of Our Visitors - Don't Let Good DMDs Go To Waste! - We Need Them Here.

I wanted to feature this post on the front page because it really captures the struggle you all are going through. Who really can afford to go through this whole gauntlet put up by the ADA? Please post your own personal stories hear. The country needs to hear us. - Anthony

Hello! Facebook Groups For Foreign Trained Dentists.

I am planning to have my 5 Philippine interns revamp this site with 2 weeks of effort. Part of the effort will be to cross promote on Facebook. There's a Drupal for Facebook module which will let the content written here be published to a Facebook group.

I was going to start my own group but I found these two that already had a base of folks. Also, not a lot of posts. However, what I am offering is articles written that are geared towards organizing our efforts around several fronts.

Here are the groups I'll targe.

Second Opinions On Dental X-Rays?

Is it illegal to give an opinion on a dental X-ray? Say your dentist says you need a root canal? It might be helpful to know that three foreign trained dentists agree that you:

  • Don't need to do it right now.
  • Don't need it.
  • Need to do it immediately. Perhaps we can get collect some history over the Internet of folks that also had root canals at your particular dentist.

Does it matter if the dentist is living in another country where they are fully licensed or fully licensed in another country and living in the United States?

Run A Practice Without Practicing.

I met Sandhya Suresh who found the site on one of the search engines. Sandhya happened to live by me. He's an Indian national living in the U.S. with his wife who works in IT. Back home. Sadhya has two endodontic clinics which he is running remotely from abroad. In the U.S., he's looking to study for the ADA Part I exam but also pursuing other business ventures that would yield shorter term income. It was great meeting Sandhya and hope to collaborate with him on ideas over the forseeable future.

Are there grounds for prevention of interstate commerce?

I'm not a lawyer but a friend of mine and I were discussing this. Since foreign trained dentists are licensed in California, can there be grounds under some of the interstate commerce arguments that unconstitutional measures are being used to keep those dentists from providing their service in other states?

Critique of JADA article on Foreign Trained Dentists.

I came across this Feb 2007 article about the origins of foreign trained dentists. It's based mostly on a study of foreign trained dentists who applied for the National Board Exam Part II from 2002 - 2005. It was encouraging to see my wife's school, Centro Escolar University, prominiently placed within the applicants. It was discouraging to see no evidence that Centro Escolar was accredited with the ADA.

More Positive Stories Than This Please!

Happy Holidays everyone. I gave my daughters a Wii and Wii Fit for Christmas. Wii has a newsfeed on it that takes national news from the internet via a WiFi connection. Guess what one of the articles on Christmas day was about?

A foreign trained dentist name Carlos Flores was caught running a dental clinic in Peekskill, NY in his kitchen. On top of this, Carlos claims to be a licensed orthodontist in Ecuador. You can find the article here. When I was a kid growing up in a Filipino community in the 1970s, I vaguely remember visiting a Filipino dentist in his home. Not sure if he was licensed or not or who he was. Within our own cultural communities, we would go to these folks. Their reputations would be passed on by word of mouth. Never had a problem.
