ForeignTrainedDentists.Org is a social network which aims to promote integration of international / foreign trained dentists living in America. The current road map for foreign trained dentists to practice in the United States serves as a brick wall. ForeignTrainedDentists.Org calls for foreign dentists and their patients, dental reform organizations, American dentists, politicians, insurance companies, and foreign dental schools to unite in pursuing this cause. Our hopes are to contribute to an American society with so many gaps in dental care that can be fulfilled by fully qualified foreign trained dentists living in America.

IF YOU ARE A FOREIGN TRAINED DENTIST LIVING IN THE U.S. PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT ON YOUR IDEAS FOR HOW WE SHOULD BUILD THIS SITE. I see we've already gotten hits from Utah and Maryland. You will be asked a simple math question so we can make sure you are a human commenting and not a Internet Robot :).  See this blog for my initial ideas: http://www.cognitivemetaphors.com/foreigntraineddentists.  I've been talking to a lot of people with a lot of good ideas. I like to do the problem justice by capturing the ideas of everyone in the same situation in a comprehensive, well maintained community website.

** UPDATE 08/12/2010 - Hope you all are keeping up the good fight. I am reviewing changing the website software to a social network in a box which more conducive to collecting user participation and assigning points so that the highest contributing users are recognized. I will look to see if I can transfer the user logins and articles we've written first. Probably the change won't happen til October. **

Read the comments attached to this article from people who are currently in this situation.

Dental Tourism In The Philippines

So my wife and I are in the Philippines visiting family. We both sad to say have not seen a dentist for more than 10 years. Back home, my dental insurance seems never enough to cover the care. I'd really like to know going in to the appointment exactly how much it would cost and what would be covered. Perhaps this fear and my last experience of paying several hundered dollars for a cleaning years back kept me away. I am glad we were lucky to have our friend Rob in our lives who takes good care of our kids teeth in the US.

Schools Represented By Users Of The Site.

Another interesting retrieval of user profile information. People coming to this site come from the dental schools below. I wonder which ones of these are partnered with the American Dental Association? Perhaps other students of these schools could band together and join the movement to make their dental education programs recognized on par with what's needed to have credentials and value in America.

Two Hundred And Four Years of Dental Practice Experience From My Registered Foreign Trained Dentists Being Wasted In America.

From all the people filling out their profiles on the site, I added up the number of years you were able to practice. I counted

204

years of dental experience from foreign trained dentists registered on this site since March 2009 that is not being utilized in America due to restrictions and barriers to entry for practicing in this country.

What a waste of talent when there are such shortages for good dental care here!

TAKING AN IMPRESSION AND GOING TO A FOREIGN LAB

I was at a party last night with dear family friends who are also Filipino. My friend's mother had a few months back cracked her dentures and was wearing a temporary replacement. She's retired and I bet these days, even if you have dental insurance, there is a big out of pocket expense.

Pepsi RefereshEverything.Com Contest

I was reading through a free copy of the Wall Street Journal that we got from the Marriot where we stayed this weekend. There was a large ad for RefreshEverything.Com. A forum for posting ideas that could help the country. People would apply, layout their idea, and then get votes. I will plan to put together an application along with video for the next version of the foreigntraineddentists.org community. I plan to tie a few of the ideas we came up with in the last year of posts together into an entry to the contest.

Brick Walls

My name is xxxx..I love this webpage (Foreign Trained Dentist)because the comments posted are my thoughts exactly!

My Husband is from Central America where He graduated as a Dentist, then in 1998 He moved to Connecticut. We got married in 2000, and now after 9 years and 2 kids, We feel stuck and frustrated. At first, was the language barrier so He went to school to learn english.  But with every attemp to progress in the process of revalidating his license here in the US there is a disappointment, because without this revalidation the years that He went to the University are not any good!  He is currently working as a Dental Assistant with extended duties(of course).

Should You Complete A Foreign Dental Program If You Intend To Go To The U.S.

Hello,

my name is ****. I am a dental medical student in Germany (7th semester). I´ve planed after finish my education in Germany immigrating in the USA and work there as a dentist. Therefore i´ve got some question and hope you can help me.

Is that right, that my education or qualifying of German Dentist School/University isn´t accepted in USA? Maybe i have to repeat my qualifying in dentistry in the USA again?! Isn´t there any other opportunities? - So, if i have to repeat my education of dentistry in USA, where could i realize that, how much does it cost and how many time i have to spend on it? Is there any suppporting for financial resolution?
What´s about the time as an assitant dentist - how many time i have to spend on it?
What would you prefer or recommend to me, should i finish university and assistant dentist here in Germany, than immigrate in the USA or should i just finish university and immigrate directly (personally i refer to immigrate after finishing university).
Another further question is, do i need a greencard and how could i get it?
Oh, i see there´s a lot of questions.

MY RESPONSE:

Good evening ****,

I am glad to meet you and happy you found my site. Here are a few things you should consider.

Dental Hygenist Question

CAn you help me please? 8:50 PM

Hi ****. Thanks for chatting. A few things...

You can become a dental assistant pretty easily by just getting a certification in radiology and having of course the proper work visa. For dental hygenist, you generally have to take 2 year courses though I think the state of Florida has a more lenient program. As far a I know, there is no provision for foreign dentists to take the boards straight. please let me know if you find out differently.

Dental Boards Tough On Everyone

I was at the shore this weekend talking to my sisters neighbor. He's a dentist but works for a pharmaceutical company as a researcher and does not practice. I told him about the site, some of the personal stories people posted, and the brick walls that keep foreign trained dentists from using their skills in America.
